4/A/58 - Alameda to Warm Springs BART via Calaveras Road
A cool day with mostly overcast skies led to a high average speed. This route is made more wonderful by some great scenery and the avoidance of an OAB (out and back). Quite a few cyclists were encountered.
This time, I delayed the assembly time to 0900. Only Klaus Schniedergers, our Webmeister, declared himself willing to join me. Though I was embarking on a nice route, I prefer having some company. Also, I had the benefit of practicing my German with him.
While departing from Alameda, about five drops of rain hit us, but no further precipitation was encountered. Going up Calaveras, I could already tell, that my new wheelset, a warranty replacement from Mavic, would propel me to some new PRs. The same applied to Klaus, though he attributed this to only his second ride on this route.
Instead of going through Dolores in San Leandro, we proceeded up Juana Avenue to reach the Calaveras climb. Juana has recently been resurfaced and is only awaiting striping and new speed bumps. It is also the safer approach to Grand Avenue, because it does not require navigating through a 4-way stop with an opposing exit from the 580 freeway. Many roads are being resurfaced and marked with bike lanes, a very welcome development in our region.
Going up the Davis Grade with a tail wind made things easier and at 1130 we were in Sunol for our lunch break, with an average speed of 16.2 mph. Klaus was kind enough to buy me a sticky bun and he purchased some other sugary treats for himself.
Going up Calaveras was a breeze, as we were sheltered from the freshening Westerly wind and the sun was starting to peek through. I would forge ahead and wait for Klaus to catch up on this climb and the rollers which followed. We reached the Warm Springs BART station already at 1355 at an average speed of 15.8 mph. Since we live only one block apart, we were both home by 1500.
Hopefully more members will join me on the next Calaveras ride, or they can plan one on their own. The route and cue sheet are out there for this fabulous ride, as well as the link https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26518038.
