It is with regret that your Board announces that Carolyn Mason decided to resign from our Board for health reasons.  Her resignation was effective July 1, 2015.  As many of you know, Carolyn has had a nagging knee problem for years and late this last spring, her time came to deal with it.  To do this, she needed to simplify her life and felt it was best for her to resign from the Board.  Her first priority was to get her knee fixed, get back to riding and then consider returning to the Board when she is fully mended.  The Board regretfully agreed with and respected her decision.

The good news is that last month Carolyn took care of the knee problem and had knee replacement surgery. She is on the mend and doing very well.  So well in fact that she is back on a stationary bike, working on her strength and flexibility --- way to go Carolyn!!!  Carolyn has also agreed to continue to work on special Board projects as we need her skills and expertise.

Thank you for your dedication to our Board and to Team Alameda.  We will miss your regular interaction and wish you continued success in your recovery.  We all look forward to seeing you out on the road then back on the Board soon.

After some careful thought Lisa Koltun has made the difficult decision to resign her position on the Board of Team Alameda.  Her work commitments have become too intense to keep up with those and her duties to the Board, so something had to give.  We want to thank Lisa for her energy and enthusiasm on the Board during this last year.

But fear not!  Lisa isn't giving up bike riding or being a Team Alameda member, so we will continue to see her on weekend rides, but maybe not as often as we would like.  After all, she needs to relieve that stress somehow!

Lisa's position of Vice President on the Board will be taken up by Rick McLeod - at least until the end of the year when the Board and its new members will again choose the four Board of Director officers.

Every year on or about September 1st, your Board of Directors begins a search for new Board Candidates.  Remember, this is your club.  It runs on people power.  It does not run itself.  Things don’t just happen.  If you have enjoyed what the club offers and feel like participating in Team Alameda at the next level, consider responding to this Call for Candidates by expressing your interest.

The Call for Candidates is now open and will run until September 30, 2015.  The election of Directors will take place between October 21 - 27, with results being posted on our website on October 31, 2015.

This year we have seven (7) Directors whose terms are expiring, and we need new candidates to replace those leaving.  There are three current Board members who desire to serve another two year term - Shel Milligan, Rick McLeod & Joe Mariscal - which leaves us with four seats to fill.  Should we have more candidates than seats, we will conduct on-line voting in October (details to follow).

Some things to know about the Director positions:

    • Director terms are two years
    • Directors are elected to the Board, but not for a specific position
    • Your skill sets and desires will determine your Board duties
    • The new Board elects four officers each year at their meeting in January - President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer

If you are interested in serving on YOUR Team Alameda Board of Directors, please contact Rick McLeod and/or Joe Mariscal.  Please contact us even if you have previously expressed an interest since we need to confirm official candidates this month.  One of us will get back to you to discuss in greater detail your interest and what time commitments you should expect.  If you would like more information about board activities and position descriptions, visit the member-only section of the website (you must log in).  There you will find the bylaws, some position descriptions, and monthly meeting minutes, among other things.

Note: If you aren't interested in becoming a Board member, but would like to help with club activities, please use this as your opportunity to express that interest as well.  We are always looking for volunteers to service on committees and at events.

On Sunday, July 26th, a very large group of cyclists - estimated at 180 strong - gathered at Rock Wall Winery for a ride in memory of Dennis Stone, the late owner of Stone's Cyclery in Alameda.  At one point 110 riders stopped and posed for the picture above in front of Stone's.

Dennis has been a fixture in Alameda's cycling community for many years and his influence was felt far and wide.  It was touching to see how many people showed up for this remembrance ride.  It underscores how much of a community cyclists are.  While there were so many people there for that ride that I did not know, I was very clear that we were representing a community of people who ride bikes and enjoys doing that.

So while we were there on that day to mourn the loss of a member of our cycling community, it was a reminder - at least to me - to celebrate the community we have.

In the Bike To Work Day bags passed out this week was a flyer addressing a subject that probably affects us all - the safety of the streets here in Alameda for biking and walking.  Below is the content of that flyer:

Speak up for Safer Streets in Alameda

Tell the City Council that you support safe biking and walking

The streets of Alameda are an important part of our community.  They allow children to get to school and parents to get to work.  They bring together neighbors and draw visitors to neighborhood stores.

Is the use of a bike lane optional or mandatory?  See our Road Conditions Forum for the answer.  You might be surprised by the answer!!!
