On Sunday, July 26th, a very large group of cyclists - estimated at 180 strong - gathered at Rock Wall Winery for a ride in memory of Dennis Stone, the late owner of Stone's Cyclery in Alameda.  At one point 110 riders stopped and posed for the picture above in front of Stone's.

Dennis has been a fixture in Alameda's cycling community for many years and his influence was felt far and wide.  It was touching to see how many people showed up for this remembrance ride.  It underscores how much of a community cyclists are.  While there were so many people there for that ride that I did not know, I was very clear that we were representing a community of people who ride bikes and enjoys doing that.

So while we were there on that day to mourn the loss of a member of our cycling community, it was a reminder - at least to me - to celebrate the community we have.

Translation:  You Came.  You rode.  It's time to volunteer.

Yes, it's time again to fill some Board Of Director positions.  There are six of our current Directors whose time on the Board is up, and we need some replacements.  Think about it.  If you've enjoyed what the club offers, it may be your time to give back.

Team Alameda’s Board of Directors will open elections in October to replace half its members.  Nominations for these positions will open on September 1 and close September 30th.  The election is October 21-27.  Election results will be posted on October 31.

    • Directors are elected to The Board, but not for a specific position.
    • Your skill set and desires will determine your Board duties.  This year we're looking specifically for people who could fill the Treasurer and Secretary roles.
    • New Board members agree to serve for two years.
    • The new Board elects four officers each year in January: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer.
If you have questions, talk to any of the current Board members.  More detailed information will be forthcoming when the nomination period starts.

We already have 15 people signed up for the ride, but there are still a couple of rooms available for this great ride.  We will soon have to release these available rooms back to the hotel, so don't delay in deciding to join us for the ride.  The more the merrier!

The ride to Santa Cruz (and back) is always a great outing!  This year we will not have to worry about the Big Kahuna triathlon since it is happening on a different weekend.

    Here's the info:

    • Date:  Saturday, September 5th - Ride from Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz
    • Ride Back: Sunday, September 6th
    • Hotel:  Mission Inn - 2250 Mission St, Santa Cruz, CA 95060
      • Rates:
        • King:  $199.95
        • Two Queen Beds:  $229.95
        • One Queen Bed:  $169.95
        • Rates are higher this year, but hotel has done significant remodeling of all their rooms
      • Call to Book:  Call 831-425-5455 to make your own reservations.  You need to say you're with Team Alameda.  They have blocked off 6 of each type of room listed above for use, for a total of 18 rooms.
    • Saturday Dinner:  There are several possibilities, we are still working on that.
    • Register online via the Calendar and you can pay via PayPal.  Registration rates are as follows:
      • Non Team Alameda Members:  $20
      • Team Alameda Members:  $15
      • Team Alameda Sponsors:  $0
Rob and Lisa are coordinating the ride this year, so drop them a note so that they'll know you are planning on going.  But you do have to make the hotel reservations on your own.

So look at your calendar and make the commitment to ride and enjoy!

In the Bike To Work Day bags passed out this week was a flyer addressing a subject that probably affects us all - the safety of the streets here in Alameda for biking and walking.  Below is the content of that flyer:

Speak up for Safer Streets in Alameda

Tell the City Council that you support safe biking and walking

The streets of Alameda are an important part of our community.  They allow children to get to school and parents to get to work.  They bring together neighbors and draw visitors to neighborhood stores.

    Sign the petition:

Disclaimer:  Posting this message does not imply that Team Alameda, or the Board of Directors of Team Alameda are encouraging you to sign this petition.  Our intent is to make you aware of this petition and expect that you will read the petition and take whatever action you feel you need to.
