You may have noticed an article in the Alameda Sun on May 7th on the subject of the "Central Avenue Complete Street" project that is currently underway.  This project pertains Central Avenue between Pacific Avenue and Sherman Street.  Potential improvements may include:

    • installing a bikeway
    • enhancing pedestrian access
    • reduction of motor vehicle traffic lanes
    • addition of left-turn lanes
    • additional vehicle parking

There has already been one community workshop on this project and there is another workshop planned for Thursday, June 4th at 6:30 PM in the Encinal High School Cafeteria.

Should you be interested, show up and contribute at the workshop.  Additional information on this project can be found at the following web page:

In the Bike To Work Day bags passed out this week was a flyer addressing a subject that probably affects us all - the safety of the streets here in Alameda for biking and walking.  Below is the content of that flyer:

Speak up for Safer Streets in Alameda

Tell the City Council that you support safe biking and walking

The streets of Alameda are an important part of our community.  They allow children to get to school and parents to get to work.  They bring together neighbors and draw visitors to neighborhood stores.

The date has been set, the rooms blocked, now all we need is you!

The ride to Santa Cruz (and back) is always a great outing!  This year we will not have to worry about the Big Kahuna triathlon since it is happening on a different weekend.

    Here's the info:

    • Date:  Saturday, September 5th - Ride from Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz
    • Ride Back: Sunday, September 6th
    • Hotel:  Mission Inn - 2250 Mission St, Santa Cruz, CA 95060
      • Rates:
        • King:  $199.95
        • Two Queen Beds:  $229.95
        • One Queen Bed:  $169.95
        • Rates are higher this year, but hotel has done significant remodeling of all their rooms
      • Call to Book:  Call 831-425-5455 to make your own reservations.  You need to say you're with Team Alameda.  They have blocked off 6 of each type of room listed above for use, for a total of 18 rooms.
    • Saturday Dinner:  There are several possibilities, we are still working on that.
Rob and Lisa are coordinating the ride this year, so drop them a note so that they'll know you are planning on going.  But you do have to make the hotel reservations on your own.  Don't delay in making those room reservations - the hotel often fills up!

This year we need some people to volunteer to help with SAG vehicles.  Contact Rob ( or Lisa ( if you can help either as a driver or with a vehicle.
So look at your calendar and make the commitment to ride and enjoy!

This ride series has been designed by one of Team Alameda's best, most experienced ride leaders, Jim "Flash" Gordon.

This 7 week series will start from zero and take the new rider by levels up to the top of Tunnel Road and beyond in only 12 weeks! Rides are every other Sunday. Ride pace will be comfortable for the group. Participants are expected to maintain or even increase their riding mileage in the weeks between the event dates so that they are ready to proceed to increased exertion levels.

All aspects of road riding, traffic, gear, and group dynamics will be covered. The emphasis will be on safety, having fun and exalting in the quick progress your body can make to achieve your goal of becoming Kings and Queens of the Hill!
