A Tale of Two Tunnel Roads

  • 26 Apr 2014
  • 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM
  • Kaiser Alameda
Ride Leader: Flash

Start:  Leave from Kaiser @ 8:00 am

Description:  4/B+/32:  We will meander up the usual Tunnel Road to Sibley Park rest stop. We will turn north and ride to the Claremont crossroads, where we will descend Fishranch Rd into the back of Sibley Park, where OLD Tunnel Road begins. A smooth, steep mile long climb through the countryside (closed to cars) where the pavement ends and the dirt begins. Prepare for ridge ridin' hardpacked fire trail for another mile or so. Cattle gates, hikers, gravel, ruts here and there. Then an uphill stretch I call "rockgarden", where jagged rocks protrude like teeth all over the trail. I do this ride often on my roadbike and have never punctured.

We return to Sibley rest stop, having made a big loop, where we will then carve out a route back to the island. Now the obligatory disclaimer: THIS IS A STRONG INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED RIDE due to the technical challenges of fast downhills, steep uphills, and very unpaved surfaces. The fun factor is a 10, trust me.

****IF THERE IS NO RIDE LEADER THIS WILL NOT BE A TEAM ALAMEDA SANCTIONED RIDE****
